SENIOR DAY:
WHEN SENIOR CITIZENS MEET SENIOR HORSES

2008

This year, residents from Homewood of Williamsport had the chance to meet a few of Ranger's horses on the lawn at the farm.

Admiral was our first horse to parade in front of our guests.  He donned a fly mask and cribbing collar which generated some questions from the group.

Patti followed allowing everyone to get a good look at her and her big feet. The residents were told the history of each horse how they qualified to become Ranger retirees.

Crazy Kit performed his "tongue" trick for sweets and Sgt Tom "wow-ed" the crowd with his big size and little tail.   Additional tid-bits about each horse's personality were shared with the group.

Although our visits with the seniors is a short one, the time spent is beneficial for both the horses and the Homewood residents.  The horses get some bonus time with the volunteers, additional grooming and extra treats.  While the senior citizens get a day out in the fresh air with some interesting company.

The volunteers and horses of the Ranger Foundation enjoy days like these and look forward to next year's visit.

History of Senior Day

During our first Ranger summer (2003), one of our active volunteers suggested we host a visit from a local nursing home where her father was a resident...we did and thus began an annual event at the Ranger Foundation.

A group of residents of Homewood Nursing Home came for a visit in a special little bus and pulled up under a big shade tree where we had chairs in a circle and refreshments at hand. Ranger volunteers brought horses to the visitors and told about the horses and explained how we cared for them at our retirement home. Homemade cookies, pies and cold drinks followed. A couple hours later, as we waved good-bye to the bus with smiles all around, we knew we had begun a tradition.

We continued this tradition in 2004 and the seniors, both folk and horses had fun.

In 2005 two different senior retirement centers visited with the Ranger Foundation.  Residents enjoyed a parade of senior Ranger horses, learning about their service history and their special care.  Several residents shared their personal horse stories with Ranger volunteers and fed the horses treats.
