In
addition to giving some very deserving horses a pleasant retirement,
we at the Ranger Foundation pride ourselves in our education
program. Over the last years we have trained many many people
in the proper care of horses through our volunteer program.
Many
families and individuals have learned to groom and feed horses.
They have also learned the ins and outs of vet care, hoof
care, dental care, and tack care just by being with us regularly.
And, the Ranger horses' quiet nature makes them ideal for
beginners to learn the joy of giving to a horse and the joy
of a horse's response to gentle and kind care.
Occasionally
we invite experts in to talk to us about particular aspects
of horse management. Various groups of young people visit
us to learn what we do. We even bring in Senior citizens from
local nursing homes each summer who learn a little about horses
while enjoying a summer day in the country. Ranger volunteers
attend educational sessions elsewhere to stay on top of new
and changing issues in the horse industry. We participate
and share ideas with other reitrement and horse rescues in
Maryland. And, we educate the public at our 'open house' events
and through local news coverage.
In
the fall of 2003 we began teaching a formal class in horse
care entitled "New
Horse Owner Class" geared to adults planning
to buy their first horse.
