SENIOR DAY:
WHEN SENIOR CITIZENS MEET SENIOR HORSES

2006

Thunder and rain couldn't stop the Seniors from visiting with the Ranger horses this year.  For the comfort of the visitors, Ranger horses paraded around the retirement center's shuttle bus while Volunteer Diana MC'ed the lineup.

It was interesting to see which horses cozied up to the idling bus while others stayed at a cautious distance.  The sun peeked through for only a few moments allowing one resident to step off the bus and visit with Sgt Tom.

Thanks to the Homewood Village of Williamsport for braving the weather.  The day brought lots of fun for both the horses and the Ranger volunteers!

History of Senior Day

During our first Ranger summer (2003), one of our active volunteers suggested we host a visit from a local nursing home where her father was a resident...we did and thus began an annual event at the Ranger Foundation.

A group of residents of Homewood Nursing Home came for a visit in a special little bus and pulled up under a big shade tree where we had chairs in a circle and refreshments at hand. Ranger volunteers brought horses to the visitors and told about the horses and explained how we cared for them at our retirement home. Homemade cookies, pies and cold drinks followed. A couple hours later, as we waved good-bye to the bus with smiles all around, we knew we had begun a tradition.

We continued this tradition in 2004 and the seniors, both folk and horses had fun.

In 2005 two different senior retirement centers visited with the Ranger Foundation.  Residents enjoyed a parade of senior Ranger horses, learning about their service history and their special care.  Several residents shared their personal horse stories with Ranger volunteers and fed the horses treats.
